Your dog scratches relentlessly. His ears are inflamed, his belly is pink, and despite switching foods three times, the itching returns. In some cases, the problem may not be the new protein alone. It may also involve the barrier that normally limits what enters the bloodstream.

Intestinal Permeability and Food Sensitivity

The intestinal lining is a selectively permeable gate, held together by proteins called tight junctions—occludin, claudins, and zonula occludens. Under normal conditions, these junctions allow nutrients to pass while blocking undigested food proteins and bacterial endotoxins.

When the gut microbiome is disrupted by antibiotics, poor diet, stress, or inflammation, tight junction integrity may be compromised. The intestinal wall can become more permeable than usual. Simultaneously begin a daily canine-specific probiotic containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains. The goal is to remove the antigenic trigger while supporting gut barrier repair.

Phase 2: Rechallenge (weeks 9–10): If skin and GI symptoms have resolved, reintroduce the original protein source for 1 to 2 weeks. If symptoms return, the diagnosis is supported.
